Advisement

Academic Advisors are an important resource. Once you share your academic goals with your advisor, they will assist you in making an academic plan that will guide your choices for graduating in a timely manner and using your credit hours efficiently.

Each college and professional school has an advising center, sometimes called a success center, with full-time advising staff that are ready to help you navigate the transfer or transition process, introduce you to student resources and success strategies as you work on your academic plan. To receive advisement, we recommend:

  • Scheduling an appointment to see an advisor
  • Walk-in hours are not offered daily
    • Walk-in hours are for short advising sessions and do not replace appointments
  • Those unable to travel to UNM Main Campus can arrange for either Skype or phone appointments

Know what you need to graduate

The LoboTrax Audit report is your personalized course-planning tool that shows what you have already completed and what you need to finish and can be accessed from LoboWeb. It keeps track of your transfer work, major, college, and University requirements. You should use it to guide your way through your degree. Click here for instructions on how to run your LOBO Trax audit, and here for additional information. Another tool are the sample degree plans for your major that outline what courses can be taken for a four-year period.  The major advisor will work with each student to ensure requirements are met within the student's timeframe, availaibility of courses, and other factors.  Even with these tools, the most important is meeting with your advisor regularly.

How can I register for classes?

New students register after a four step process, get admitted, attend New Student Orientation, and be advised (note – link to the student.unm.edu page that lists advisors by major), and create a NetID. There are open registration periods where students are allowed to sign up for classes, starting off with scheduled appointment dates for continuing students. Once you are set to register, go to LoboWeb to search classes, drop, and add courses. You can also go to the Schedule site for quick class search.

Finding my major

Click on a Major that you are interested in pursuing or exploring. Once you have found a major that you would like to explore, you can look at the 4-year degree curriculum, research the major or degree’s website, and contact the department. Current students can schedule an appointment through the LoboAchieve site. Each college may have different ways for future students to schedule appointments, so do not hesitate to reach out by phone or email; there will always be someone willing to guide you throughout the process.
